Merlot-2004

Montara Merlot 2004

Winemaker, Mike McRae's Comments

Soft and subtle with a silky texture

This finely structured Merlot has a soft palate with black olive and mocha flavours and medium toasty oak complexity.

Suggested Foods

Well suited to roast lamb, pasta, lighter red meat dishes and wild mushrooms

Suggested Cellaring

Very approachable already with the option for 2 to 3 years cellaring

Viticulture

Planted in 1998 on rootstock to overcome inherent growth problems with Merlot in a cool climate. Vertical shoot positioning to give good fruit exposure. The season was classic Grampians - cool and dry with long ripening conditions - with a much later vintage producing very good yields and very good fruit quality. The grapes were picked 17th May to achieve rich, ripe fruit.

Maturation

Fermented in rotomatic tanks to extract flavour and tannins gently. Matured in new French oak barriques for 6 months.

  • 14% alcohol
  • Estate Grown, Vintaged & Bottled
